Post and Rail Fencing
Items required:
- 12’ x 3.5” x 1.5” rails
- 6’ x 5” x 3” pointed stakes
For traditional post and rail fencing, we recommend using:
- 3 x horizontal rails, nailed to vertical pointed stakes
Allow one stake to every 6ft of fencing, plus one for the end of the run; and 3 rails for every 12’ of fencing.
Close Boarded Fencing
Items required
- For a 6’ high fence, you’ll require
- 1 x 9’ x 4” x 4” post every 6 ft
- 3 x horizontal rails running all the way along the back of the fence Allow 2 no 6’ x 6” x 3⁄4” boards every 1ft
- 1 x 12’ capping rail running horizontally along the length of the fence
- Nails
We recommend using:
6’ x 6” x 0.75” boards placed vertically along the length of the area to be fenced. Attached to 4” x 4” posts that are 2 – 3ft longer than the finished height of the fence and placed at 6ft intervals; along with 2 or 3 12’ x 3.5” x 1.5” rails placed horizontally (depending on the height of the fence) along the length of the fence. If desired, finish off with 12ft length of capping and gravel boards.
Gravel boards are used to protect fencing from damp ground, to raise a fence by 3” – 6” or purely for decoration, we recommend using a 12’ x 6” x 7/8” board.
Feather Edge Fencing
For a 6′ high fence:
- 1 x 9′ x 4″ x 4″ post every 6 ft
- 3 x horizontal rails running all the way along the back of the fence
- Allow 3 x 5″ wide boards every 1ft, with 1″ overlap
- 1 x 12′ capping rail running horizontally along the length of the fence Nails
Place a 4” x 4” post that is 2 – 3ft longer than the finished height of the fence at 6ft intervals and attach 2 or 3 12’ x 3.5” x 1.5” rails to the posts to create a framework. Nail either 5ft or 6ft long feather edge boards depending on the height of your fence, to the rails. Our feather edge boards are 5” wide, so 3 boards will cover 1ft. Finish off with 12ft length of capping and gravel boards or perhaps a trellis top.
Gravel boards are used to protect fencing from damp ground, to raise a fence by 3” – 6” or purely for decoration, we recommend using a 12’ x 6” x 7/8” board.
Stock Fencing
- 5’6 3-4” cundy peeled posts
- 7’ or 8’ strainers
- 7’ or 8’ struts
- Wire
- Nails
- staples
We suggest attaching wire pignet using 5’6” stakes that are 3” – 4” diameter, with a 7 or 8 ft strainer and 7 or 8 ft strut every 50m of fencing. If the fencing changes direction, an additional strut is required.
Paling Fencing
- Palings
- Rails
- Posts
- Nails
- Post caps if required
For a 3′ high fence, we would recommend using 5′ x 3″ x 3″ posts (allow one every 6′, plus one at the end) and two rails (12′ x 3.5″ x 1.5″) to run horizontally the length of the fence. For a one inch gap, allow 3 palings per foot, each paling being 3″ w x 3/4″ d.
